A Fine Mid-18th Century Oak Welsh Dresser

The boarded rack, with shaped frieze and sides, containing three shelves above 5 spice drawers.

The base, with twin boarded top, over 3 working drawers and a pair of cupboard doors, with a flattened-ogee headed arch detail. The three central drawer fronts are false, behind which is a full-width storage cupboard.

The ends have twin panels, and the dresser stands on its original stile supports. The brass swan-neck handles are original and the oak has a wonderful deep honey colour, and burnished patination.

Length 72 inches, height 80 inches, depth 20 inches.

Richard Bebb, in his book Welsh Furniture 1250-1950, Volume II, illustrates a very similar dresser – certainly made by the same cabinet maker, on page 103. He attributes this dresser to Llaneilian-yn-Rhos, which is near Colwyn Bay, in Denbighshire, circa 1760-80.
